We are happy to announce that Folk New England’s priceless collection of Club 47 calendars, including the one pictured above, is now available online.
The calendars were started by Byron Lord Linardos, who managed the Club from January 1962 through August 1965. Jim Rooney continued the tradition while he was manager from September 1965 through December 1967. Byron came back for the final months of the Club.
The last calendar was for March 1968.
In early 1963, Byron came up with the idea to use old woodcuts to create distinctive monthly calendars, which would be sent to Club members who expressed a desire to have them. Many people saved them not only because they were so wonderful to look at but also to remind themselves of the amazing variety of artists who played at the Club over the years. Just by looking at the calendars from 1963 to 1968, you can learn about the history of the folk revival in New England and beyond.
The work of digitizing and making the Club 47 Calendars available online was all done by the dedicated staff at the Robert S. Cox Special Collections at UMass Amherst—home of the Folk New England Archive.
