FOLK NEW ENGLAND ARCHIVES
AT THE ROBERT S. COX SPECIAL COLLECTIONS, UMASS AMHERST
FOLK New England is a living repository of folk music history materials. The growing archive contains original reel-to-reel audio tapes of rare coffeehouse, concert, and hoot performances, as well as multi-format audio artist interviews and oral histories. New donated collections of personal papers, folk journals, and ephemera related to the folk music scene are being readied for digitization and preservation. The foundational Betsy Siggins Collection documents — among other things — the important story of Club 47 and of the artists who performed in Cambridge/Boston and across New England. Other acquisitions include digital copies of Rounder Records LPs, and a full run of the most important Boston magazine of the revival period, “Broadside”.
Our archives continue to grow with important collections from Tom Rush and the late Tom Curren as well as an extensive tape collection from the Boston Bluegrass Union, and the papers and interview tapes of the award-winning journalist and novelist Scott Alarik. We are currently in discussions to acquire collections from Chris Smither, Maria Muldaur, the estate of Eric Von Schmidt and others.

THE BETSY SIGGINS and TOM CURREN FUND
We are pleased to announce the creation of the Betsy Siggins and Tom Curren Folk New England Fund as part of the UMass/Amherst Foundation.
You can make gift of any size to add to the Betsy Siggins and Tom Curren Folk New England Endowment Fund. However, individuals who make gifts/pledges of a minimum of $25,000 over a 5- year period will receive a 50% match from the State of Massachusetts. This offer exists for a very limited time, and is an extraordinary opportunity to create a sizeable endowment, which will insure the viability of the Folk New England Collections well into the future. If interested in exploring this option please contact Jeffrey Rothenberg: [email protected].
We also welcome donations to the Betsy Siggins and Tom Curren Folk New England Operating Fund to cover ongoing costs of outreach and processing new collections. There are no limits to the size of your donation.
